The Independent Baby Project: Why Earlier is Better (Within Reason)

Babies want to be independent! My 7-month-old grabbed the bottle out of my hands – she wanted to hold it herself. Mind blown. Independence develops motor skills, confidence, problem-solving, and self-regulation. Start around 6 months when they reach for the bottle or push your hands away. The right tools matter – bottles designed for little hands (like dumbbell shapes) make all the difference. Guide their hands, gradually reduce support, celebrate small wins. Some days they'll want help, that's normal. In Fort Myers, independent feeding is practical – beach days, pool time, outdoor activities. You're still supervising, just not holding the bottle. Babies are secretly very capable. Give them the right tools, opportunity, patience, and encouragement. The mess is worth it! ☀️
